Day 10 of the 300-mile challenge
Monday’s ride almost did not happen. About a 1/4 of a mile in, I lost my balance leaving an intersection after stopping at a stop sign. I slammed my right foot to the pavement to prevent falling and my knee started hurting. I soldiered on through the ride – it was a beautiful sunny evening with the marine layer starting to set in. After the day I had on Monday, I originally thought that the most I would ride was 10-12 miles. I ended up riding 16.2 miles for a total of 59.8% of my challenge!
Temporarily losing balance wasn’t the only possible mishap for the evening ride. When I was heading up Airport Rd from the Hammond Trail, just past the 101 overpass, an empty flatbed semi truck almost didn’t yield to me going east on Airport. He finally braked in time and I ended up pushing the throttle to help with my evasive maneuvers. It really does amaze me how bad the drivers are here and just emphasizes the reason to why car insurance rates are so high for this county.
This week is always a busy week each year as we near the beginning of classes. As tired as I have been after work, I’m definitely making time to get my bike rides in for the American Cancer Society.
Until the next ride,
John
